Adaptive Water Safety: A Unique Approach

Adaptive Water Safety: A Unique ApproachAdaptive Water Safety: A Unique ApproachAdaptive Water Safety: A Unique Approach

Our trauma-informed, individualized adaptive swim program offers specialized swim lessons for those with special needs and includes essential drowning prevention education throughout Rhode Island.

The Standard Needs to Change

Water Safety Should Not Be One-Size-Fits-All.

Drowning remains one of the leading causes of death for children. For children with autism, the risk increases significantly, often due to wandering and a strong attraction to water. Yet across Rhode Island, many swim programs, including those offering special needs swim lessons, were not designed with children who have disabilities, sensory processing differences, or complex medical needs in mind. Too often, families are asked to help their child adapt to a system that was never built for them. The PAL Program was created to change that by providing an adaptive swim program that designs each lesson around the child, not the other way around, ensuring effective drowning prevention education.

Built With Intention

The PAL Program was established in honor of Pahal Pal, a beloved member of our community and a 9-year-old boy with autism who tragically lost his life to drowning. His story inspired the creation of an adaptive swim program aimed at addressing critical gaps in drowning prevention education and providing special needs swim lessons.

Our Approach

Trauma-Informed. Individualized. Evidence-Guided.

PAL integrates an adaptive swim program that includes:

• Nervous-system aware instruction

• Sensory-responsive teaching strategies

• Visual supports and structured progression

• Safety-first water competency development

• Adaptive pacing based on each child’s profile

We focus on individuals with:

- Autism

- ADHD

- Developmental disabilities

- Physical disabilities

- Genetic conditions

- Medical complexity

- Sensory processing differences

Each lesson is individually designed to ensure effective special needs swim lessons — not retrofitted. Our commitment to drowning prevention education is evident in every aspect of our program.

I was definitely nervous coming in for our first day, but the intake process for the adaptive swim program was the most in-depth I’ve ever experienced for swim lessons. I was able to explain exactly what works for my kids. From the time we walked in, the staff made us feel welcome and helped the kids get comfortable in the space. Swimming can be challenging for them, but with the emphasis on drowning prevention education, PAL has made it a positive experience for our family. It’s reassuring to know they offer special needs swim lessons tailored to our children's needs.

Inclusion First

"What stood out about the adaptive swim program was how intentional everything felt. The staff took time to learn about my child before even getting in the water, which made a huge difference. The environment was focused on building confidence step by step, and instead of a traditional swim lesson structure, they provided special needs swim lessons that allowed my child to progress at her own pace. This experience not only fostered enjoyment of swimming but also included essential drowning prevention education, making it a comprehensive program." Rob S.

Removing Systemic Barriers

Financial Barriers Should Not Determine Accessibility

Access to adaptive swim programs focused on drowning prevention education should never depend on a family’s financial circumstances. The PAL Program provides scholarship opportunities to qualifying families, ensuring that cost does not prevent individuals with special needs from receiving specialized swim lessons that are trauma-informed. Our mission is rooted in removing systemic barriers — not reinforcing them. Through sponsorships and funding initiatives, we strive to expand access and reduce financial obstacles wherever possible. Because safety is not a luxury. It is a necessity.
